Classic Rock Guitar: Guitar Book (The Ultimate Beginner Series)
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (August, 2000)
Author: Warner Bros Publications
Average review score:

Beginners - Play Real Songs Fast
I've bought lots of beginner books for learning rock and blues guitar technique, but this book is great for learning to play real songs quickly without having to understand a lot of theory or being a master of scales. The standards covered in the book and CD are simplified versions - slowed down - of Hotel California, Europa (Santana), Tush, Riders on the Storm and Proud Mary. Once you pick through the tab a few times, you can start playing along with the CD fairly quickly. I'd still recommend that you invest in a utility that let's you slow down the tracks even more to be able to hear the different notes, like Transcribe!

Climber's Guide to American Fork/Rock Canyon
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (May, 1995)
Author: Bret Ruckman
Average review score:

It doesn't get any better than this
Not only is this the only guide book Ive ever seen for these two canyons, but is down right excellent. It gives accurate route descriptions and locations for hundreds of amazing routes. Even the topos are accurate, right down to the # and placement of bolts on most routes.

Climbing California's High Sierra, 2nd : The Classic Climbs on Rock and Ice
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (01 December, 2001)
Authors: John Moynier and Claude Fiddler
Average review score:

The must have guide for all aspiring High Sierra climbers.
This is the 2nd edition of Moynier's and Fiddler's High Sierra "best of" guide. John Moynier and Claude Fiddler are very experienced Sierra climbers/guides with hundreds of routes and dozens of firsts to their respective credits. The authors have painstakenly selected over 100 outstanding routes ranging from moderate class 3 peak bagging exercises to Grade V walls and Grade VI linkup routes. The represented climbs are among the most popular and most sought after climbs in the range. Climbers of all skills and goals will benefit from this guide. They provide topos, verbal approach, climbing and descent descriptions and a rich historical perspective on climbing in the Range of Light.

Improvements in this guide include more detailed topos, a larger selection of alternate routes, more historical anecdotes, and a refined selection of climbs.

While this book is an excellent stand alone guide, many climbers would benefit from RJ Secor's Peaks, Passes and Trails as a companion guide.

I rate this book 5 of 5. Most climbing guidebooks are dry material... just the facts Ma'am. But this one colors all of the technical data with stories of old heros and epic struggles. Buy it so these guys will be tempted to write more!

Climbing Tales of Terror
Published in Paperback by Menasha Ridge Press (01 December, 1990)
Author: Tami Knight
Average review score:

Demented climbing humor, great fun!!
Tami Knight draws some of the best and most demented cartoons its ever been my pleasure to read.

I just keep laughing when I think of Sid and Ed the Siamese climbers, 'Rinky-Dinky Dogs', and 'Avalanch Poodles'.

I can't think of a better way to spend a non-climbing day.

Special note: Cavers ('the Pale Ones'), hikers ('Fosslized Guide Book Authors'), and 'lycra-clad weenies' should not look at these cartoons unless they're into abuse.

Collector's Book Of Fluorescent Minerals
Published in Hardcover by Van Nostrand Reinhold (November, 1983)
Author: Manuel Robbins
Average review score:

Fluorescent Minerals books
Although quite a bit of information in this expensive book is contained in Manuel Robbins later less expensive book, this is really a book that you should own or at least read. If you are intrigued and excited about collecting fluorescent minerals, this book is extremely easy to read and contains a wealth of information. I especially liked the story about his friend who worked in the Sterling Mine and collected interesting minerals. It put the rarity (although many are not that tough to find an example of) of the NJ fluorescent minerals into perspective. When you look at a piece of Hardystonite or Espirite, you really appreciate that you are looking at something rare and wonderful. The color charts in the book are handy and easy to work with. I am an author of books on antiques and collectibles and would love to write a book to identify fluorescent minerals. There is so much good, easily understandable material in this book that I would have trouble doing better. When the author M. Robbins wrote his next book, his technical buddies must have asked him to include lots of technical information. The second book is more like a graduate school textbook. I am not a geologist. I like to understand what I am reading. I enjoyed this book a great deal.

A Colour Guide to Paleosols
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (27 June, 1997)
Author: Gregory J. Retallack
Average review score:

Excellant text on the basic science of paleosols.
This is an excellant and easy to read book about paleosols. It covers all of the basic science behind paleosol identification, paleoclimate interpretation from paleosols, and the current classification schemes. The pictures are fantastic and highly entertaining. Retallack has succeeded in writing a book that combines textbook quality knowledge with ease of reading and stimulating text. This is a book to sit and read on a weekend afternoon as much as it is a valuable resource for interpreting paleosols. In fact the only thing wrong with this book is its absurd price, otherwise it is a must have.

The Compensation Handbook: A State-Of-The Art Guide to Compensation Strategy and Design
Published in Hardcover by McGraw Hill Text (January, 1991)
Authors: Milton L. Rock and Lance A. Berger
Average review score:

The Compensation Handbook
As a compensation consultant, I sought a comprehensive guide for all aspects of the field. The 4th edition of The Compensation Handbook provides simple and direct answers for every compensation problem. It is a virtual "who's who" of compensation professionals providing well-constructed, concise information on area of expertise. No matter what information I seek -- from base compensation, variable compensation, executive compensation, performance and compensation, compensation and corporate culture, or international compensation -- I can find pertinent, practical guidance in this one book. Compensation issues that are currently challenging every company - regardless of size, age, industry -- are especially well developed in The Compensation Handbook. The section on Corporate Culture containing chapters on "Culture and Compensation" and "Connecting Compensation, Behaviors, Culture, and Strategy to Win" by William M. Mercer consultants, "Rewarding Scarce Talent" by Patricia Zingheim, "Gaining a Competitive Edge by Improving the Return on Human Capital" by Peter LeBlanc, and "The Role of Work-Life Benefit in the Total Pay Strategy" covers issues that every compensation practitioner or human resources professional will grapple with in the forseeable future. Even the effect of technology and computers on compensation administration are handled in The Compensation Handbook. Information on global compensation strategies is relevant not only to practitioners by to anyone seeking employment on foreign soil or working for a foreign company. The Compensation Handbook is a winner.

The Complete Beatles Quiz Book
Published in Hardcover by Outlet (April, 1983)
Authors: Edwin Goodgold and Outlet
Average review score:

Must have for any serious Beatles fan
A must have for any serious Beatles fan. Unlike many other Beatles quiz books, this book offers the usual easy questions that every hardcore fan knows, but it also offers up so really tough ones (and they are not stupid questions like what color was John's coat in the third scene of the Magical Mystery Tour TV show, but are more music oriented). Truly a fun and informative Beatles book. The original 1975 and 1985 Bell Publishing First Edition's has become quite sought after by Beatles memorabilia collectors, listing for up to $[money] (scaled evaluation on condition) on various antiquarian book dealer sites and catalogues.
